With a social science credential and a background in spelling and
geography bees as well as academic decathlons, it’s not a big
stretch to audition for the “Jeopardy!” quiz show on television,
right?
By Sandi Redenbach (BA 1972, Credential 1973), Chair
Fall is a great time to update our alumni and friends about what
the School of Education’s Alumni Council has been up to and what
we hope to accomplish this year and beyond.
The School of Education is proud to celebrate and honor the
achievements and contributions of educators at our fifth annual
reception, which will be held during the first week of May to
commemorate National Teacher Appreciation Week.
During the event, we will also present our annual Distinguished
Alumni Award and Rising Star Award. Honorees exemplify “doing
what matters” in the field of education. Nominating deserving
alumni is easy—fill out the online
nomination form by March 5, 2012.
For more information, contact Doreen Barcellona Strnad at (530)

Help us celebrate the many ways that all of our alumni transform
the lives of children every day.
Mary Catherine Swanson (Credential ‘67), a member of the School’s
Board of Advisors, has been awarded the 2010 Distinguished
Achievement Award by the Cal Aggie Alumni Association. Her award
is in recognition of exemplary achievement for her work as the
founder of AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination).
In our latest Alumni
Matters, we feature three alumni whose leadership and
commitment to empathy and community building is truly inspiring.
We also highlight upcoming events, encourage you to nominate
outstanding alumni and share the Dean’s thoughts on The Campaign
for UC Davis.
Sandi Redenbach and Ken Gelatt know the power of teachers to
shape young lives. As teachers they led by example for more than
40 years, guiding students to imagine a better future and
providing the tools they need to reach their goals.
Leading by example is one reason Sandi and Ken wanted to be the
first alumni to include the School of Education in their estate
plans. A belief in the power of education to change lives and a
commitment to leave a legacy for the future compelled these
veteran educators to pay it forward.
