Academic Literacy Summit: A Call to Action in Practice & Policy

WHAT IT IS:
An intensive one-day Summit on ways to improve the academic literacy of culturally and linguistically diverse students in California schools. The Summit will feature:

  • ways to help hard-working students who just can’t keep up
  • how to meet the full range of  literacy and language abilities in a classroom
  • ideas to improve programs to meet academic literacy needs of all students at all grade levels

WHY IT’S IMPORTANT
The language and literacy demands of all content areas can challenge students, especially English language learners and those who need literacy support for school learning. We all need to learn more about how to equip ourselves and others with ways to develop students’ academic literacies—and how to mine the multiple literacies students bring from their home backgrounds.

WHAT THE SUMMIT OFFERS

  • Nationally renowned keynote speakers with creative research-based approaches to thinking about language and literacy issues in the classroom
  • Panels of local teacher-researchers with strategies for how to use inquiry in the classroom to inform instruction
  • Breakout workshops with regional and national experts, partnered with practicing teachers, with research-based strategies and approaches for specific classroom contexts
  • The opportunity to enhance the field’s understanding of academic literacy and help establish a regional research agenda relevant to experiences of local schools, by participating in built-in discussions and reflection throughout the day.
