Teacher Research

The CRESS teacher research program supports a regional network of teacher research groups, facilitated by an experienced teacher researcher. A few of the twenty or so groups are discipline-based; most groups are school-based. Collectively, the groups support teachers of all grade levels and from all disciplines.

Groups consist of three to twelve teachers who participate in a yearlong seminar during which they conduct systematic research in their own classrooms or schools.

Groups collectively examine different approaches to classroom inquiry, focusing on methods teachers can use to investigate their students' learning and their own development as teachers. Teachers participating in these groups share a commitment to improving their own practice and the success of their students.

facilitator in a year-long teacher research program. Please share
this with colleagues who have been teacher research facilitators in
the past as well.

You may also want to share the news that Greg Hamilton and Joanne
Bookmyer have secured a National Education Association (NEA) grant to
support a year long teacher research training and professional
development institute for 6 new teacher researchers.

Audience: Current and former facilitators.
Summer Institute Honoraria: $250

Course Units: 3.0 quarter units available for Summer Institute and
year-round meetings (four required); units awarded at the end of the
2008-2009 Teacher Research year.

Institute Activities:
Brainstorm strategies to support the Teacher Research process and
develop new tools (i.e. graphic organizers, “friendly” articles about
research methods, etc.) to support teachers in their efforts to:
(1) develop research questions
(2) identify and collect data sources
(3) analyze data
(4) write their research reports

Collect and generate writing prompts to use for each meeting. Work
with Publications Coordinator to consider ways to imbed more writing
throughout the year. Take time for reflective writing about the group facilitation process.

Calendar 2008-2009 TR Program activities. Rethink Supper Seminars
and Voices From the Classroom Conference. Calendar four
facilitators’ meetings for 2008-2009, plan for newsletter, website
