UC Davis Mathematics Project: Who We Are & What We Do

A cooperative school/university program committed to the enhancement of standards-based instruction and student achievement, the UC Davis Mathematics Project, established in 2001, continues the work of the Northern California Mathematics Project. One of 22 sites of the California Mathematics Project, UCDMP primarily serves counties from the east bay through the greater Sacramento area. The UCDMP works with districts, schools and individual teachers in a variety of ways, including professional development, research on effective mathematics instruction, and inservice and preservice programs. Our programs all involve collaborations between classroom teachers and university faculty, and our "teachers-teaching-teachers" approach encourages participants to assume roles of leadership.

The overarching goal of the UCDMP is to raise student achievement in mathematics by:

  • Developing and enhancing teachersí content knowledge and instructional strategies aligned with the California Mathematics Content Standards and state-adopted textbooks.
  • Expanding opportunities for professional development in mathematics by developing a network of teacher leaders.
  • Improving the mathematical achievement of students in low-performing districts through partnerships and collaboration.
  • Developing and maintaining a professional mathematics education community that creates ongoing opportunities for teacher networking and learning.

Ultimately, the goal of the UCDMP is to enhance the quality of mathematics education by increasing teachersí mathematical and pedagogical content knowledge and by supporting and developing leadership skills.

UCDMP offers a variety of programs for area mathematics teachers: intensive Summer Institutes that provide teachers from kindergarten through community college the opportunity to meet and work together with University staff and faculty; Saturday follow-up sessions and supper seminars for Institute Fellows; teacher research groups; open programs that promote the use of a variety of instructional strategies to better meet the needs of all students in all the different strands of mathematics; and inservice programs designed to fit the needs specified by schools and school districts. Special attention is given to the needs of English Learners. All of these programs offer participants the opportunity to learn new mathematics content and develop a deeper understanding of the mathematics underlying the standards they teach, as well as the opportunity to discuss instructional techniques and assessment methods.
