Teacher Educator Fellowship
Applicants to the Ph.D. program for the 2007-08 academic year are invited to apply for a competitive fellowship opportunity. This three-year fellowship will support a Ph.D. student whose career goals are to be a teacher educator/scholar and assume a position in a college or university. The selected fellow will receive fee remissions as well support through half-time TA, Graduate Student Researcher, or Associate-In appointments.
Being a teacher educator fellow gave me the experience and confidence to expand my work with novice and veteran teachers. Having real world, on-the-ground experience in a variety of diverse school settings gave me both the experience and credibility required in my current position. - Pam Spycher, teacher educator fellow and senior program associate in the Comprehensive School Assistance Program, WestEd.
Goals
- To prepare doctoral students for positions as teacher educator/scholars
- To provide support through a series of scaffolded experiences in the functions a teacher educator/scholar will be expected to perform:
- Training, mentoring and experience in providing supervision
- Training, mentoring and experience in conducting inquiry on the preparation of teachers
- Training, mentoring and experience as a teaching assistant in three classes for student teachers.
How It Works
Each Fellow is assigned an individual mentor from our clinical faculty in an area of authorization which links with the Fellow’s expertise. Fellows are encouraged to participate in key activities within that program, including shadowing the supervisor, attending methods and field practicum seminars and working within the program in any other activities. Participation with the Teacher Education Research Group will be especially significant in helping the School of Education to look critically at existing curriculum and program elements and, for the Fellow, in learning more about how teacher education programs work through the process of curriculum development in alignment with our Credential/M.A.
Over the three years of the Fellowship, fellows fulfill a variety of functions, working as teaching assistants in teacher education courses, research assistants contributing to the research agenda of the Teacher Education programs and as associates assisting in the supervision of student teaching placements.
Criteria for Selection
• Experience and a record of excellence as a teacher in K-12 schools.
• Appropriate credential for area of expertise.
• Promise as a teacher educator/scholar.
• Commitment to a career working in teacher education.
