In 2010, Nate Hall went on school visits and attended writing
workshops to become a better poet. Talented and amazing as is,
Nate became the 2010 SAYS SLAM Champion. Along with other SAYS
SLAM finalists, he traveled to Los Angeles to be part of the 13th
Annual Brave New Voices. Interacting with teams from all over the
world, and honored by celebrities like Common, Rosario Dawson,
Talib Kweli, Sanaa Lathan, these photos share his incredible
experience.
Local Sacramento youth want a space for their voice to
heard. SAYS, in collaboration with Sol Collective, presents
Sacramento’s only Under-21 OPEN MIC. This is a free
event that is open to the general public, but only youth who are
21 years of age and under are allowed to sign up on the Open
Mic. Come out and support what the youth have to say.
On Friday May 15, 2009, over 350 young people from the Sacramento
region (Twin Rivers Unified School District, Elk Grove Unified
School District, and Sacramento City Unified School District all
brought buses packed with students and teachers) spent the day at
UC Davis in writing workshops. In the evening, they braved the
stage at the Veterans’ Memorial Theatre. The theatre exploded
with their voices.
On May 15-16, 2009, more than 300 young people from the
Sacramento region participated in poetry slams, workshops and
student-only town hall meetings at UC Davis.

In July 2009, SAYS took a small group of young poets and
educators to the International Teen Poetry Festival in Chicago.
The annual festival hosted hundreds of young poets, representing
over 50 cities and towns across the United States and beyond, who
attended writing workshops and performances from July 14-19,
2009. SAYS was among the hundreds.
