Collabinar: Analyzing Large CCS Datasets

March 7, 2023

Outcomes of analyzing CCS data from iNaturalist and eBird

Topics discussed:

  1. How far can we push data collected through citizen science efforts?
  2. How can we assess whether we have pushed the data too far?
  3. Are there quantities of interest that citizen science data can uniquely help us understand?

Ben Goldstein is a PhD candidate in ecology at UC Berkeley. His dissertation focuses on quantitative methods for species distribution modeling. He’s especially interested in large-scale biodiversity data, including participatory science, and in understanding what these data reveal about both wildlife and human observers.

Sara Stoudt is an applied statistician with research interests in ecology and the communication of statistics. Stoudt received her doctorate in statistics from the University of California, Berkeley, and she is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mathematics at Bucknell University. Follow her on Twitter (@sastoudt) and check out her recent book with Deborah Nolan, Communicating with Data: The Art of Writing for Data Science.
