Dr. Bird is a postdoctoral researcher at the Center for Community & Citizen Science. She received her PhD in Science & Agriculture Education from the University of California, Davis, and with her advisor Dr. Heidi Ballard.
As a former high school science teacher and now as a researcher and teacher educator, her aim is to further environmental and social justice through and within K-12 science education. She investigates youth participation in authentic science research, called community and citizen science. She studies how youth’s environmental science research––such as monitoring birds on their school campus or investigating the health of local forests––influence how youth see themselves as legitimate participants of science and active members of their communities.
