Portrait of Marlene Bell

2009 Distinguished Education Alumna

“I thoroughly enjoyed my years as a classroom teacher before I took on the work of an advocate for students, teachers and public education full time.”

Marlene Bell has dedicated more than 40 years to the mission of public education, with a special emphasis to equity in access and opportunity for student achievement. Marlene has served in the roles of classroom teacher, national trainer on issues of equity, and labor consultant. She retired as Assistant Executive Director for Region 2 of the California Teachers Association, where she managed the staff and coordinated CTA programs in a region that included 30 of California’s 58 counties.

Marlene is currently the Program Director of the CTA-IFT/UC Davis Algebra Success Academy and serves as consultant to the project’s largely teacher-driven program. The Algebra Success Academy is a partnership between the CTA, UC Davis, and participating school districts.

She is the first recipient of the UC Davis School of Education Distinguished Alumni Award, and was the Alumni Speaker for the School’s 2010 graduation ceremony.
