What is the CBEST?

The CBEST is the California Basic Educational Skills Test and is a test that when passed, will satisfy the basic skills requirement. The CBEST tests your basic understanding of mathematics, writing, and reading.

Here is some brief information about the CBEST:

  • The CBEST is offered every other month at specific testing sites
  • The CBEST is made up of three subtests-reading, writing, and mathematics
  • The three subtests may be taken all on the same day or separate days
  • When you go to the test, the test booklet has all three tests in it, but you can choose which test or tests you want to take
  • You have four hours for the test regardless of how many subtests you are taking
  • The test is scored on a pass/no pass basis
  • If you do not pass a subtest you may retake the test until you receive a
