Chicanx and Latinx Education Symposium Research Panel

Photos from our January 18, 2024 event at the UC Davis International Center

The first UC Davis Chicanx and Latinx Education Symposium engaged the question: What is Chicanx/Latinx Education in theory, research, and practice? The event brought together three interdisciplinary Chicanx/Latinx education scholar-activists to present their work in a research panel, dialogue with us, and participate in a mentorship session with undergraduate/graduate/professional students engaged in studies and work at this intersection.

The research panel was moderated by Melissa Moreno, PhD, Professor, Department of Ethnic Studies at Woodland Community College. María Cioè-Peña, PhD, Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education spoke on “¿Soy Acaso Negra?: A Testimonio on the Erasure of Black Latines within, and beyond, Bilingual Education.” Laura C. Chávez-Moreno, PhD, Assistant Professor at the UCLA César E. Chávez Department of Chicana/o & Central American Studies, addressed “Grounding Bilingual Education in Ethnic Studies.” And Jonathan Peraza Campos, MS, a Program Specialist at Teaching Central America, addressed “A Liberatory Education of the Global U.S. South.”

This event was co-sponsored by the UC Davis School of Education, the Department of Chicana/o Studies, the Davis Humanities Institute, and the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
