Overview

Multiple Subject Coursework Option

The coursework option to meet your Subject Matter Requirement (SMR) involves completion of a course addressing each of the domains listed for a Subtest.  Courses must be degree applicable and non-remedial.  You must have passed the course with a grade of C- or better.  Each subtest is evaluated independent of the other subtests, so it is possible that you will have coursework to meet the SMR for one subtest but not another.

A complete Subject Matter Guidance document is available to download under the “related links” section to the right.

Here are the domains for each subtest:

Subtest I:

  • Language and Linguistics
  • Non-Written and Written Communication
  • Reading Comprehension and Analysis
  • World History
  • US History
  • California History

Subtest II:

  • Number Sense
  • Algebra and Functions
  • Measurement and Geometry
  • Statistics, Data Analysis, and Probability
  • Physical Science
  • Life Science
  • Earth and Space Science

Subtest III:

  • Dance
  • Music
  • Theatre
  • Visual Arts
  • Movement Skills & Movement Knowledge
  • Self-Image and Personal Development
  • Social Development
  • Cognitive Development (Birth through Adolescence)
  • Social and Physical Development (Birth through Adolescence)
  • Influences on Development (Birth through Adolescence)

If you need clarification as to what  is required in each of the domains listed above, you may review a list of elements for each domain on the CTC website here.  See page 2 for the index. Think of the elements as clues about the type of coursework you are looking for to meet that domain. If the course title and/or description do not include the content needed but the content was included in the course, include the course syllabus when you submit the information for official evaluation.

Applicants to the UC Davis Credential/MA program should request a Subject Matter Evaluation as early in the application process as possible.  Submit your Subject Matter Evaluation here. Your coursework will be evaluated once we confirm that you have started an application to our program.  The Credential Analysts will let you know the results in about five working days. This may take longer during peak application times.

If you have questions, please email our Credential Analyst.
