Global Collabinar: Building Connections – Citizen Science & the Ocean

December 4, 2019

Building Connections: Citizen Science and the Ocean

Wednesday, December 4, 2019
3:00 - 5:00 PM PST

Dr. Rachel Kelly from the Centre for Marine Socioecology, Tasmania presented new marine citizen science research, and we discussed developing programs to support the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. Please see event flier for more details.

Marine citizen science is expanding across the globe, but its potential links to marine conservation, stakeholder engagement and ocean stewardship are poorly understood. This Collabinar presented recent research on marine citizen science, exploring:

  1. the capacity to increase community awareness and support for marine conservation, and
  2. the range of marine citizen science projects linked to marine conservation globally.

It aimed to provoke productive discussion on the future of marine citizen science, particularly in aligning projects with the aims of the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).
