Maria Arvizu-Espinoza has served as Deputy Superintendent of the Yolo County Office of Education (YCOE) since 2021. In this role, she leads the Educational Services Division, overseeing programs including Early Childhood Education, Prevention and Wellness, Special Education, Curriculum and Instruction, Alternative Education, and Adult Education. With a strong track record of enhancing educational services and driving systemic improvements, she continues to apply her expertise to strategic initiatives such as the Yolo County Roadmap to the Future.

With over 29 years of experience in education, Arvizu-Espinoza began her career as a paraeducator at her children’s school before earning her teaching credential as a bilingual elementary teacher specializing in English language development. She made a significant impact supporting diverse student populations and engaging families. Her passion for literacy and instructional support led her to roles as a Literacy Coach, English Learner Coordinator, and later, Director of Migrant Education, where she co-led efforts across twenty-four counties to develop and implement supplemental programs for Migrant students ages 3 to 21 and their parents.

As an elementary principal, she focused on strengthening early literacy programs, enhancing inclusive learning environments, and building strong partnerships with families and the community to enhance student success. She led initiatives to improve student achievement through data-driven instruction and professional development for teachers.

In her role as an alternative education principal, she provided leadership for programs designed to support at promise youth, who face academic, behavioral, or social challenges. She developed and implemented intervention strategies to re-engage students, expanded career and technical education opportunities, and collaborated with community agencies to provide wraparound services. Her leadership helped create pathways for students to earn diplomas, transition successfully into higher education or the workforce, and develop essential life skills.

Before joining YCOE, Arvizu-Espinoza served as Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services for the Colusa County Office of Education, where she oversaw all aspects of the Educational Services Division, including Alternative Education, Adult Education, Student Services, and Curriculum and Instruction.

Arvizu-Espinoza holds a master’s degree in administrative leadership, complementing her extensive experience and leadership skills.
