Statement from Ruben Reyes, Superintendent of the Robla Elementary School District in Sacramento on the Quality of the School’s Teacher Education Program
June 17,2013
The relationship between the Robla School District and the UC Davis Teacher Education program was established many years ago. We provide placements for students teachers during their preparation year, and the program provides us with quality young people entering the teaching profession. Robla has a very diverse student population, ethnically, socio-economically and linguistically. This setting allows teachers in the UC Davis Teacher Education program to gain experience in classrooms where the children of California are represented.
Our involvement in the program benefits us greatly as these
teacher candidates and our teachers engage in reflective
discourse about current and future practice.
The challenges we face as a school district in this state are
many. Discussing our work with those entering the profession
helps us all to continuously work toward improving our work.
Currently the Robla School District is making some significant
gains in our students’ achievement. This progress is due to the
hard work of teachers, students and families. Many of our
teachers are graduates of the UC Davis Teacher Education program.
They have helped shape our practice and enjoy the rewards of
teaching in these challenging times.
We continue to hire graduates of the program. Indeed, the Robla
School Board is currently considering contracts for a number of
recent graduates of the program. As we considered the large
number of applications for our current teaching openings, the UC
Davis candidates were among the strongest. We are confident that
they will become the dedicated professionals that past UC Davis
graduates have become.
I am a graduate of the UC Davis Teacher Preparation program, and
I am very proud to be an alumnus.
