California Association of Teachers of English
February 29-March 2, 2024
Peggy will be in Los Angeles for the California Association of Teachers of English. Peggy will be presenting alongside our collaborators at the California Environmental Literacy Initiative, focusing on ways in which environmental literacy can be used to support deepening engagement with English Language Arts skills, including student voice.
Environmental literacy and justice belong in every California classroom, not just in the Science classroom. Rather than tackling environmental justice as a separate topic or content area to teach, we will explore how to integrate environmental literacy and justice into the core educational experience, maximizing opportunities within the classroom to highlight students’ lived experiences. CAELI continuously prioritizes projects through the lens of equity and cultural relevance so that our efforts speak to the urgent need for not only environmental literacy, but also environmental justice. During this interactive session, we will explore ways in which environmental justice shows up in ELA classrooms, share resources and materials available through the CAELI network and beyond and make space for participants to share their hidden gems with the group as well.
