Governor Brown Approves $490 Million for Teacher Training
District Leadership
Governor Brown signed legislation this week that authorizes $490
million for teacher training in California. School districts will
receive funding, based on their number of full-time equivalent
certificated staff, for teacher training services.
The chaptered legislation states: “four hundred ninety million
dollars ($490,000,000) shall be apportioned to school districts,
county offices of education, charter schools, and the state
special schools in an equal amount per certificated staff in the
2014-15 fiscal year.” The funds can be expended for some of the
following purposes: beginning teacher and administrator support
and mentoring, professional development, coaching, and support
services for teachers who have been identified as needing
improvement or additional support and professional development
for teachers and administrators.
Districts will be be required to (A) develop and adopt a
plan delineating how funds allocated pursuant to this section
shall be spent, and (B) on or before July 1, 2018, districts
will report detailed expenditure information to the State
Department of Education, including, but not limited to, specific
purchases made and the number of teachers, administrators, or
paraprofessional educators that received professional
development. The State Department will determine the format
for the report.
