Farewell to Todd Harwell
Thank you and best wishes!
This fall we said goodbye to postdoctoral scholar, Todd Harwell, as he moved into his new role as Life Scientist at the US EPA. Todd joined our team two years ago, jumping into our ongoing work on the role of community and citizen science (CCS) in marine protected areas. Under Todd’s leadership, this project has had direct impacts on California policies that will guide monitoring of marine protected areas in the coming decade, and generated a trove of data that is helping us understand CCS in conservation in new ways. We are grateful for Todd’s patience, collaborative spirit, hard work, and creativity as a researcher!
Beyond his excellent work as a researcher, Todd made many positive contributions to the Center for Community and Citizen Science as a colleague and frequent wearer of manatee-themed shirts and face masks. He helped establish and lead the CCS in Conservation spring seminar, a central component of our new CCS in Conservation graduate fellowship program. He also helped develop and pilot a half-day workshop for researchers seeking a “primer” in CCS. And despite his “ghost-doc” status (being based in Portland), Todd was excellent at building community. He joined us frequently in-person, facilitated our weekly lab meetings with aplomb, and was always ready to meet with colleagues, exchange ideas, and give advice.
We will miss Todd’s presence at the Center, but know that he will continue to be a close colleague, and make important contributions in his new role with the feds. Thank you, Todd, for all your wonderful work!
