School of Education

  • Introduction to Schools (undergraduate, 4 qtr units)
  • Elementary Science Teaching Methods (2 qtr units, teacher credential program)
  • History of Agricultural Education (4 qtr units, graduate)

University of California

Program Development (2013 and 2014- Two cohorts of students)

University of California Education Aboard Program – Vietnam:
Developed a semester-long interdisciplinary program for students from all 9 UC undergraduate campuses. Co-Visiting Scholar Prof. Glenn Young and I led the development of an undergraduate program that includes 18 qtr units of instruction.  We worked with UCEAP and Can Tho university staff, faculty and administrators to design a rigorous course of study that includes a UC faculty taught core course, Vietnamese language instruction, and service learning or research projects.

Course Development (2012-13)

Title: An Evolving Vietnam (undergraduate, 6 semester units), co-developed with Prof. Glenn Young, Department of Food Science

The UCEAP core course focused on development issues in Vietnam ranging from social structure, to economic development, to the Vietnam War, to agriculture and climate change. The course also includes two week-long field trips in Vietnam.

International

Vietnam Education Foundation (2013-14)

Title: Action Research in the Agricultural Sciences- University of Agriculture and Forestry- Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi University of Agriculture

This course was developed with co-teacher Prof. Glenn Young from the UC Davis Department of Food Sciences. The course is designed to help Vietnamese undergraduates learn to conduct agricultural research in an applied setting. The course follows recommendations from the U.S. Congress funded Vietnam Education Foundation to link teaching with research. The course is taught on-site and via distance learning technologies in both Vietnam and in the USA. It is uniquely structured because students’ travel to field sites where the course authors have applied research being conducted on safe vegetable production. Students learn both natural science and social science research techniques and use these to help poor farmers solve local problems. The end result of the course was a research seminar where students’ research findings were presented to USA and Vietnamese governmental officials and academics.
