CCS coming to Madison!

Center staff participating in the annual NAAEE conference

The North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE) is holding its annual conference in Madison, this week. Our friends Heidi Ballard, Jen Metes, and Emily Harris are there to talk about our work on youth focused citizen science, and ways that citizen science can better inform conservation science and management.

Examining Participation in Citizen Science, Science Identity, and Conservation Actions
Tuesday, 1:15 PM–1:45 PM, Ballroom A

Citizen science (CS) as environmental education? We know little about how participating in environmental research and monitoring may lead to science learning and conservation. Beginning with our mid-project analysis of repeated interviews with 60 participants in 6 CS projects, we asked: How can EE research link identity and conservation actions? Presenter: Heidi Ballard, University of California, Davis

Place-Based Science Learning Across Contexts in Youth Citizen Science
Wednesday, 9:45 AM–10:15 AM, Ballroom A

We investigate youth participation in citizen science across classroom, garden, and science lab contexts. We explore how students pursue their interests, leverage their sense of place, and engage in science learning across multiple contexts. We share data from case studies of youth-focused citizen science. Presenters: Emily Harris, University of California, Davis; Heidi Ballard, University of California, Davis.

COASSTal Collaborations: Building Community & Conservation Through Citizen Science
Poster Presentations 12:30 PM–2:00 PM, Community Terrace

Coastal Observation & Seabird Survey Team (COASST) is a citizen science project through which participants collect beached bird data that is shared with resource management agencies. We examined how COASST builds trust with volunteers, communities, and resource managers to identify ways citizen science can better inform conservation science and management. Presenter(s): Jennifer Metes, UC Davis
