The UC Davis Upward Bound Programs serve schools
in Sacramento, Shasta, Siskiyou and Solano
Counties. A full list of participating schools can be found
here.
Sacramento Solano Region
Summer Program
Each summer, the Upward Bound Sacramento and Solano Counties
region hosts 60 high school students for an intensive,
six-week residential program.
What to Expect
For six weeks, students will spend their weekdays living on the
UC Davis campus and return home on the weekends. During the week,
they are required to take classes (eligible for up to 10 units
of high school elective credit) as well as participate in
various activities, workshops, test-preparation programs, culture
nights, college field trips and more.
Classes
Classes are attended daily and follow a block schedule
pattern. Upward Bound students attend four core subject courses:
Mathematics, Science, English, and a foreign language. Students
also are assigned an elective course and a mandatory study
hall period. Different elective classes are offered each
year.
The Bridge Program
Upward Bound also offers a concurrent summer program for Upward
Bound participants who have recently graduated high school.
Bridge students also take the four core academic courses listed
above as well as a college success course. The college success
course prepares them for potential challenges and/or
experiences they will face in post-secondary education, in
hopes of aiding students transitioning from high school to
college.
Shasta Region
The Shasta UC Davis Upward Bound is a
federally funded program designed to motivate and prepare
eligible students for postsecondary education and the workforce.
This program combines school-day-based services at Anderson Union
High School in Anderson and West Valley High School in Cottonwood
with a six-week summer program. Hear directly from our
participants in the student-created video project at

Upward Bound Elective Class
Each student accepted into Shasta Upward Bound will be enrolled
in the Upward Bound elective class at their high school, taught
by their Upward Bound advisor. This course, included in their
regular school schedule, provides students with support in
academics, course selection, study skills, personal development,
college admissions, financial aid and scholarship
applications.
Summer Program
Shasta Upward Bound students also have the opportunity to
participate in a six-week Summer Program on their high school
campus where students will be given support to take online
community college courses, attend workshops and engage in
career exploration activities. The Summer Program also includes a
one-week college tour where students live in a college dorm, eat
at the dining hall and travel to colleges and universities in the
area. The Upward Bound elective class is required for
participation in the Upward Bound program. The six-week Summer
Program is strongly encouraged but not required and provides
flexibility to students who cannot attend on a regular basis.

During the course of a student’s participation in Shasta Upward
Bound, we will provide opportunities for parents/guardians to
attend informational workshops, meetings, and events designed to
provide information and provide support through the
college-going process. Shasta Upward Bound encourages
parent/guardian involvement with students as they navigate the
college-going process. Please contact one of the following if you
