Introducción

A este taller asistirán tanto los cuidadores como los profesores del proyecto BBILY.
Comenzamos el taller dando la bienvenida a los cuidadores y profesores al taller n.º 5. A continuación, los cuidadores tendrán la oportunidad de compartir las tareas que han realizado con sus hijos en el cuarto taller, entre las que se incluyen la tarea del rompecabezas y la tarea de la fiesta de palomitas de maíz, o una tarea similar que pueda resultar más interesante para sus hijos, con el fin de comprender cómo podrían resolver una tarea de modelado abierta. Ofrecemos a los profesores la oportunidad de compartir estas tareas que pueden haber realizado con sus alumnos en sus aulas.

Introduction
Time: 15 minutes
This workshop will be attended by both the caregivers and the teachers from the BBILY project.
We begin the workshop by welcoming the caregivers and the teachers to workshop #5. Caregivers will then have the opportunity to share the tasks they have done with their child(ren) from the fourth workshop that include the puzzle task and the popcorn party task or a similar task that may be of more interest to their child(ren) to gain an understanding of how their child(ren) might solve an open-ended modeling task. We offer the teachers the opportunity to share these tasks that they may have done with their students in their classrooms.
The caregivers can also share the ways they are supporting their child/children’s as they complete their mathematics homework as well as their child/children’s learning of mathematics in both Spanish and English.
Actividad uno: ¿Qué es una fracción?
Duración: 15 minutos
A continuación, pasaremos al último tema de la serie de talleres, que son las fracciones. Comenzaremos pidiendo a cada persona que haga una lluvia de ideas y anote en el organizador gráfico todo lo que le venga a la mente cuando oiga la palabra «fracción». Después, les pediremos que trabajen en pequeños grupos (dos cuidadores y dos profesores) para compartir y añadir a sus listas las respuestas de los demás. A continuación, cada grupo compartirá sus respuestas con el resto del grupo.
Activity One: What is a Fraction?
Time: 15 minutes
We will then move on with our final topic of the workshop series, which is fractions. We will start by having each person brainstorm and record on the graphic organizer everything that comes to mind when they hear the word “fraction.” We will then have them work in small groups (two caregivers and two teachers) to share and add to their lists each other’s responses. We will then have each group share their responses with the whole group.

Activity Two: Understanding Basic Fractions
Time: 15 minutes
We share a five minute video that is in Spanish and English that gives an overview of fractions.
After the video, the caregivers and the teachers will be given the opportunity to share their ideas/thoughts about the video and why it is important to have an understanding of fractions.
Actividad tres: Tarea y debate sobre vocabulario relacionado con las fracciones
Duración: 15 minutos
Los cuidadores y los padres se dividirán en pequeños grupos (dos cuidadores y dos padres) para intercambiar ideas e identificar el vocabulario en español e inglés relacionado con las fracciones (por ejemplo, parte de un todo, igual, equivalente, numerador, denominador, etc.) en un documento de registro de vocabulario. Los grupos anotarán cada palabra en español e inglés y proporcionarán una definición para cada una. A continuación, compartirán sus listas con todo el grupo.
Activity Three: Fraction Vocabulary Task and Discussion
Time: 15 minutes
We will have the caregivers and the parents in small groups (two caregivers and two parents) brainstorm and identify the vocabulary in Spanish and English that are associated with fractions (e.g., part of a whole, equal, equivalent, numerator, denominator, etc) on a vocabulary recording document. The groups will record each word in Spanish and English and provide a definition for each one. They will then share their lists with the whole group.

Activity 4: Creating Equal Shares Task
Time: 30 minutes
The caregivers and teachers will work in small groups (two caregivers and two teachers) to solve the following math tasks in at least two ways on large paper to provide them with lots of workspace (e.g., large poster paper or butcher block paper). Using pictures, each group will show how much of the candy each child gets. After each group has completed their work, everyone will do a gallery walk to review each other’s work.

Actividad cinco: Facciones en el hogar y la comunidad Tarea
Duración: 20 minutos
Los cuidadores y profesores trabajarán en pequeños grupos (dos cuidadores y dos profesores) y harán una lluvia de ideas sobre las tareas con fracciones que se realizan en el hogar y/o la comunidad de los cuidadores. A partir del ejercicio de lluvia de ideas, el grupo creará uno o dos problemas con fracciones y lo compartirá con todo el grupo.
Activity 5: Fractions in the Home and Community Task
Time: 20 minutes
The caregivers and teachers will work in small groups (two caregivers and two teachers) and brainstorm the fraction tasks that takes place in the caregivers’ home and/or community. From the brainstorming exercise, the group will then create a fraction task word problem (or two) and share it with the whole group.

Homework
Time: 5 minutes
We encourage the caregivers to share the fractions video with their child/children at home as well as the fraction tasks from this workshop. We encourage the teachers to do these tasks with the students in their classrooms as well.
