CCS Events and Trainings

Events and Trainings

Overview

We offer trainings for educators, and are developing programs for scientists, practitioners and others interested in community and citizen science.

Events

Our one-hour hybrid Collabinar events invite colleagues from across the globe to bring us their most exciting challenges and opportunities in community and citizen science. Researchers and practitioners provide short presentations describing  their work, and pose questions for discussion. Collabinar attendees engage with the presenter to collaboratively work through challenges and design opportunities. The occasional series ultimately aims to support mutual learning, and advance projects and partnerships.

Educator trainings

Our workshops for formal and informal educators are grounded in research on what works in youth-focused community and citizen science. Participants learn about key practices for youth and educators, which can be applied in a wide range of existing citizen and community science projects, or in the development of new ones. They do hands-on citizen science work, and connect with Next Generation Science Standards.

We currently offer two programs: a half-day workshop, and 3-day (12-hour) institute, and are very open to collaborations that allow us to pilot additional training and support models.

See below for information about upcoming training opportunities, and contact us if you’re interested participating, or bringing a training to your area.

Doing Science Together – Exploring Diverse Approaches to Participatory Research

Join the UC Davis Office of Research on Friday, December 13 at 10:30am to learn about how scientists in a vast array of disciplines are engaging members of the public in community and citizen science. From global projects to hyperlocal community-based projects, there are many ways of working with people who do not self-identify as professional scientists, but who can contribute meaningfully to research.

Conference: California Association of Science Educators

November 8-10, 2024

Peggy Harte will be presenting at The California Association of Science Educators workshop this November on what it looks like when elementary students grapple with local data. In participatory science, students contribute to science by collecting data that generates new knowledge. Participants will learn what participatory science is, what it looks like in elementary classrooms, and a research based framework for designing projects, allowing attendees to see firsthand how young minds contribute to real-world science.
