January 31: STEM-Tastic Sunday Summer Camp Preview

Looking for great summer camps for your kids? You can’t do better than the School of Education’s Adventures in Enrichment STEM day camps. January 31: Applications Due for 2016 Globe Education Academy

This is a unique, immersive professional development opportunity for Sacramento-area drama and English teachers who work with grades 7-12 to deepen their teaching of Shakespeare. The Globe Education Academy for Teachers includes local training events, two weeks in London with Shakespeare’s Globe practitioners, and a fall festival for participants and their students. Applications can be downloaded here and are due on January 31, 2016.

February 23: Words Take Wing with Author Sheila Hamanaka

Join us at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria, Sacramento Main Library, for an evening presentation by celebrated children’s author Sheila Hamanaka. Hamanaka is the author and illustrator of over 20 beloved children’s books, including All the Colors of the Earth. Register for this free event here.

Calling All Alumni: Mock Interviewers Needed for Teaching Students

Each year, alumni and other experienced educators conduct mock interviews for our teaching students to help prepare them for their teacher hiring interviews. We receive wonderful feedback from our students about how helpful these mock interviews are—you may even have benefitted from one yourself. If you’d like to serve on our February 27 mock panel this year, please contact Maria Rochin to sign up for a time block. Our students thank you! 

January 30: CANDEL Networking Event

We’re hosting our first CANDEL student-alumni networking event on Saturday, January 30, featuring a discussion with Professor Gloria Rodriguez and lunch with alumni and the current cohorts. If you’re a CANDEL alum, be sure to register here.

FACULTY NEWS

New Associate Deans: We’re pleased to announce that Professor

Cynthia Carter Ching has been appointed the new School of Education Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Instruction, and Professor Peter Mundy has been appointed the new Associate Dean for Academic Personnel and Research. “The associate dean roles are highly critical to the success of our academic, scholarly, and teaching missions,” said Dean Harold Levine. “I will very much enjoy working with Cynthia and Peter and look forward to their new ideas and energy.”

Professor Tobin White Named Chancellor’s Fellow

School of Education Professor Tobin White has been selected to be a 2015-16 Chancellor’s Fellow. The Chancellor’s Fellows Program is supported in part by funds from the Davis Chancellor’s Club and the Annual Fund of UC Davis. The program was established in 2000 to honor the achievements of outstanding faculty members early in their careers, and the committee that reviewed Dr. Tobin’s record noted the high quality and significance of his research and teaching. He joins School of Education professors Michal Kurlaender and Heidi Ballard, who are also recipients of this campus-wide honor.

ALUMNI NEWS

Nick Williams (MA ‘08) was surprised during a school assembly with the Milken Educator Award and $25,000 to spend as he likes. You can watch the video of Nick hearing he won the award and being cheered by his students here. The Milken Educator Awards have been described as the “Oscars of Teaching.” We are so proud of Nick and this recognition of his fine work in the field of education!
