Education Minor FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Overview

What are the approved courses for the education minor?

You can find a list of approved courses on the Courses for the Minor in Education web page.

When and how do I formally declare a minor?

Plan to submit a minor declaration form in OASIS the quarter before you plan to graduate. All 20 units of approved coursework must be listed on the petition. The minor petition form can be found in OASIS under the Forms & Petitions tab.

Is advising available for the education minor?

Yes! Drop-in advising is held via Zoom on Thursdays from 2-2:45 p.m. and Fridays from 10- 11 a.m. You can also email questions to eduadvising@ucdavis.edu.

Is fieldwork required for the education minor?

Yes. EDU 100 is the first core class for the minor and requires 30 hours of an off-campus fieldwork experience. Once registered in the class, you may review the available internships.

EDU 181 and EDU 183 may replace EDU 100, and also require off-campus internships. NOTE: EDU 181 and EDU 183 are not electives.

Learn more about required fieldwork.

What is the EDU 192 or EDU 198 Process?

To participate in an EDU 192 internship or EDU 198 directed group study, you must file a Variable Unit Course Contract form and secure a faculty sponsor. Once the Variable Unit Course Contract form is reviewed and approved, a CRN will be issued to you. Learn more at the EDU 192/198 Process web page.

What is transcript notation?

If you’re a UC Davis student working in an internship that meets a specific set of requirements, you may have your internship recorded on your transcript as a transcript notation. In order to qualify, an internship must:

  • Be 40 hours over a significant period of time, usually a ten-week quarter
  • Be supervised and evaluated by professionals and not fellow students
  • Involve significant activities, assignments and/or projects
  • Have paperwork submitted within the first two weeks of the quarter.
  • To receive Transcript Notation (TN) please review this link and follow all directions: https://icc.ucdavis.edu/find/internships/tn. Transcript Notation is managed by the Career Center.

What is the Incomplete grade policy?

An Incomplete (“I”) grade may only be assigned by the course instructor. “I” grades must be completed by the end of the third quarter in residence after they were issued. If the course instructor is no longer at UC Davis, contact the School of Education for assistance at eduadvising@ucdavis.edu

Visit the Office of the University Registrar website for full information on Incomplete (“I”) grades.

Where can I find education class schedules?

Undergraduate and Ph.D. education class schedules are listed on the Quarterly Course Schedules web page. They are updated each year in March. Class schedules are subject to change.

What are waitlists and PTAs?

Students may join the waitlist for a closed class and are either added if another student drops or (if space is available) can be issued a Permission to Add number (PTA) from the faculty.

PTAs are faculty approved and are not issued until the second week of a term. Student Services does not issue any PTAs.

You must be on the waitlist and reach out to the faculty member teaching the course to request consideration for a PTA.
