Kaozong Mouavangsou
MA ’16, PhD ’22
As a product of the U.S. educational system, I grew up being miseducated about my own culture and history. Although the school curriculum didn’t explicitly teach me that my culture was inferior, the lack of Hmong history and culture in school made me believe this.
Mikael Villalobos and Isabel Nuñez
Villalobos: BA ’93, EdD ’14 Nuñez: Cred. ’14, MA in progress
Phung Nguyen
BA ’13, Cred. ’14
In 2003, when Phung Nguyen arrived
in California at the age of 14, he was placed in a class where he
spent hours learning English words with three letters. Vietnam
was far away, and he was homesick.
Today, Nguyen (BA ’13, Credential ’14) teaches physics, biology, and eighth grade science at Sacramento’s School of Engineering and Sciences (SSES), one of the newest and only 7th through 12th grade programs within Sacramento City Unified School District.
