UC Davis offers both Multiple and Single Subject teaching
credentials as well as Bilingual Authorizations in Spanish or
Mandarin, and a Master’s of Arts degree.
Multiple Subject Teaching Credential
A Multiple Subject
teaching credential authorizes you to provide instruction in
all subjects in a self-contained class for students in grades
twelve and below, including preschool, and in classes organized
primarily for adults. However, most multiple subject teachers in
California teach in grades K-6.
Single Subject Teaching Credentials
You will earn a Single Subject teaching credential in your
specific subject which authorizes you to provide instruction in
only that subject to students in grades twelve and below,
including preschool, and in classes organized primarily for
adults. However, most single subject teachers in California teach
in grades 7-12.
At UC Davis, Single Subject credentials are offered in:
Credential with a Bilingual Authorization in Spanish or Mandarin
A Bilingual Authorization
allows elementary and secondary teachers to provide instruction
to English learners communicating in the target language of
Spanish or Mandarin:
- Content instruction delivered in the student’s primary
language
- Academic instruction delivered in English designed
specifically for English learners
- Instruction for English language development
Teachers who earn the Bilingual Authorization in addition to the
Multiple Subject or Single Subject credential are in great demand
in the public schools.
Master of Arts in Education
The School of Education’s Teacher Education program includes a
Master of Arts in Education
which starts in the credential year and culminates with research
on a classroom practice in year two. It is available only to
students who have participated in the School of Education’s
credential program. While most students continue on to their
M.A. immediately after their credential year, some choose to
wait.
