Resident Teacher Training & Resources

Options for New Resident Teachers

Overview

The California Commission on Teacher Credentialing requires that all Teacher Preparation Programs provide new Resident Teachers a minimum of 10 hours of initial orientation to the program curriculum, information on effective supervision approaches such as cognitive coaching, adult learning theory, and current content-specific pedagogy and instructional practices.

Our goal is to make this process as simple as A + B + C = 10 hours completed.

Complete the required items in section A, next complete your choice of five hours in section B, and then submit the verification form for all training via the link in section C.

A. Targeted Training

  1. View a recording of the UC Davis Program Information Session for New Resident Teachers presented by the Chair of Teacher Education, Dr. Passmore.  Be sure you complete the Verification Form (shown below in section C) to let us know that you completed this training.
  2. Attend the subject specific training with the faculty in the subject area. Faculty will provide the specific details on date and time, typically held in the fall of each school year.
  3. Review the information on the Mentor Teachers website under the following two headings:

B. Your Choice Training

We want your training to be meaningful to you as well as relevant to your work with your student teacher.  Click on any topic that interests you for more information on training options. We ask that you complete a combination of 5 hours from these subject areas:

Equity & Social Justice

Inclusive Diversity (Neurodiversity & Emergent Bilinguals)

Instructional Strategies

Developing Academic Language and Literacy of Young Emergent Bilinguals

Optional

The optional category covers trainings or conferences in your content area that are not on our list but you believe are relevant to supporting a student teacher.  The training can fall into two timelines:

Training you are planning to take:

  • Advance Approval. Please email us a summary of what the training is for advanced approval.  Be sure to include website links and/or agenda.
  • Advance Approval Not Needed. If you don’t want advance approval, simply complete the verification form after you have completed the training and we’ll let you know if it is not approved.

Training you have already taken:

  • If you completed a training you believe helps you support a student teacher, verification form with relevant details about the training.
  • Training must have been completed in the last five years.

If you have attended or are attending a training that you think another teacher would be interested in, and it is not listed in one of the choice areas, please share it with us so we can review it and hopefully add it as an option for others. Email us a summary of what the training is and include website links and/or agenda.

C. Document your training by September 30, 2025.

Please let us know which training options you complete by submitting a short verification form for our records.  This last, very important step allows us to document that you have completed this requirement.

Because this training is intended to assist your work in supporting student teachers, it is our hope that you will complete this training as early in the academic year as possible, but no later than September 30th.

Please contact us if you have questions.
